Tuesday Tips: Snack Spiders!

Happy Tuesday! We've made it through Monday. Woo-hoo! Halloween is right around the corner and you might be looking for fun ideas to make with your children. I have one that is lots of fun to make.

You have two options for the spiders body - ritz crackers or vanilla wafers. Either is yummy. Make a mixture of both!

You'll need:
Peanut butter
round crackers or the vanilla wafers
pretzel sticks
small chocolate chips.

Spread the peanut butter on a cracker or cookie, then in the peanut butter you can either arrange 8 pretzel stick or break 4 into 8. Depends on the length you want legs. Once you have 4 on each side, take another cookie or cracker, spread some more peanut butter and put it on top. Then to add the chocolate chips as eyes! Use a little peanut put on the bottom of chocolate chip and place on the spider body. And wa-la! You've got a yummy spider to eat!

Get creative!

Tuesday Tips... Halloween S'mores

Looking for a fun treat to send in for your child's Halloween party this year?

I'm making these cute little bags. A do-it-yourself S'mores Kit with a ghostly theme.

All you need is...

a sandwich size bag (I found some with Halloween images)

Two graham crackers per bag

A fun sized Hershey's bar

Halloween themed marshmallow (Peeps)

My sister-in-law made these this weekend for her daughter's Halloween party...

She used the pumpkin marshmallow

I'm using these next week when I make them for my son's class...

Either way works ;)

Happy Halloween!

Tuesday Tips...Food isn't just for eating!

Food isn’t always just for eating

Lemons
- A while back, Tamaria wrote a post about cleaning with lemons (http://spicyauthors.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/tuesday-tipscleaning-with-lemons.html?zx=b0e10388f95dcbc1) I thought it would be fun to look at what other unusual things we could do with food.
- Lemons can also be used as a bleaching agent to make your whites whiter.

Cucumber

- If you want a cheap and easy way to pamper yourself, cucumber can do more than just cool tired and puffed up eyes. Cut up some cucumber in a bowl with boiling water, and the nutrients will be released in the steam, not only cleansing your skin, but relaxing you as well.
- Lessen the appearance of cellulite by rubbing a few slices on the problem area.
- Run out of shoe polish? Rubbing a few slices of cucumber on your shoes will bring out the shine in no time.
- Also great to remove tarnish from stainless steel

Olive oil
- Great as a moisturizer for your skin
- You can use it to condition and tame your hair, just rub into your hair and leave to soak in, and then wash as usual.
- Healthy to use around the house as a polish, and to silence squeaky door hinges.

Tea
- You can use freshly brewed tea to clean wood furniture and floors.
- Use peppermint tea with a pinch of salt as a mouthwash. Peppermint is a natural antiseptic and will help soothe sore gums.
- Use tea leaves to give your roses a boost by sprinkling all around the base and then covering with soil, next time you water them the nutrients will be released and will help them to grow.

Tuesday Tips - Motivation

Hello everybody! It’s Emily here, and I’m going to be doing something a little bit different for my Tuesday Tips today. I’ve been on a bit of a rollercoaster lately, more ups and downs than I can count, and I’ve been so busy and on top of it all I’m getting prepared to start another year of studying in just a few days. So you know those days where you just feel like flaking out and can’t seem to find any inspiration or motivation? Well, I might be cheating a tiny bit but I’m going to use some of my favourite motivational quotes as my Tips, and hopefully give you a boost to your week J

1. Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t –you’re right. (Henry Ford)

2. You have exactly one life in which to do everything you’ll ever do. Act accordingly. (Colin Wright)

3. In the end we only regret the chances we didn’t take.

4. What better place than here, what better time than now.

5. Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try one more time. (Thomas A. Edison)

6. You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream (C. S. Lewis)

7. Why put off until tomorrow something you can do today?

8. If a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing well.

9. If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten

10. Believe you can and you’re halfway there.

So there you go, I’ve left it to wiser people than me to give you a few tips this week! I’d love to hear your own favourite inspirational quotes so leave a comment if you have another one!

Have a great Tuesday x x

Tuesday Tips... Quick & Easy Chicken Fajitas

Happy September!

At my house we're busy getting for school to start on Thursday and life to get back to normal.

Being a mom of two young girls I know that many nights we don't have enough time to put together an elaborate meal. I'm going to share with you my Quick & Easy Chicken  Fajitas.

What you'll need:

1 medium green bell pepper and 1 medium yellow (or red) pepper
(optional one sweet onion) Cut into strips
4 boneless, skinless chicken breast cooked and cut into strips (or you can by the ones already made and cut)
1/2 cup of water
1/2 cup of salsa
1 envelope of Lipton Onion Soup Mix
1 teaspoons of vegetable oil
12 (7-8 inch) flour tortillas warmed

Preparation:

In a large skillet place peppers, (onions) chicken, salsa, and soup mix. Stir about 5 minutes until everything is mixed and heated.

Place mixture in tortillas, roll, and serve.

I always place sour cream and shredded cheese on the table along with rice to complete my meal.

Enjoy!

Tuesday Tips... Caramel Apple Martini anyone?

My, my, my how the time flies. Can it really be nearing the autumn season? My absolute favorite time of the year? Sorry for those of you die-hard, must hang on to every last drop of summer but I'm a fall girl. For those of my martini drinking friends, I think you'll like this one ;)

Caramel Apple Martini

(makes one serving)

2 ounces vodka (your choice)
1 ounce sour apple schnapps
1/2 ounce butterscotch schnapps
crushed ice

***optional - you could swirl some caramel in the bottom of the glass before pouring in the drink***

In a martini shaker combine ingredients and shake well to chill.
Pour into a martini glass and serve.

Now if you want to get overly ambitious you could...

dip rim of the glass into melted caramel and crushed peanuts. It does add a nice touch ;)

Please remember to drink responsibly.

Tuesday Tips - Give your confidence a little boost ;)

Hello everybody, it’s Emily again, and today my Tuesday Tips are all about boosting confidence, because let’s face it, sometimes I’m sure we could all use a little bit more.

1. Stop comparing yourself to others! You’re no better or worse than anybody, you’re just you.

2. If you’re feeling down about your appearance, pamper yourself! You don’t need to splash out at the spa, even a bubble bath and a fresh lick of nail polish will work wonders.

3. Smile while you walk. The more you smile, the more smiles you’ll get in return, and you’ll feel much better about yourself.

4. Do some exercise. Not only will you get a kick out of the endorphins but you’re guaranteed to feel a bit more body confident.

5. For long term confidence learn something new. Do a course, or just read a book. Broadening your horizons could give you confidence in the workplace, or even just enable you to contribute something interesting to a discussion. The more you know, the more you’ll be able to use it.

Have you got any confidence boosting tips to share? Why not leave a comment?

Thank you all for reading, and I hope you have a great Tuesday!

Tuesday Tip... Pomegranate Martini

Refreshingly delicious! A few weeks ago I had a get together at my house for my girlfriends. We're a bunch of pool moms who sit at the swim club all summer and accommodate our kids. We needed a night to ourselves. We had yummy appetizers and luscious desserts but you know what made the biggest splash? My pomegranate martinis.

They were sinful and totally easy to concoct. A mixologist I am not but even I pulled off these sexy drinks. (You'll find this drink pops up in my books because its one of my favorites. Arianna drinks this one in Surrender to Me)

1.5 oz Pomegranate Vodka (I use Smirnoff)
2 oz Pineapple Juice
A splash of cranberry juice
A Splash of cherry juice
Sugar the rim of the martini glass and garnish with fresh pineapple

Pour ingredients into a martini shaker with plenty of ice shake and serve.
Simply decadent I tell you.

***Please remember to drink responsibly***

Tuesday Tips

Hello everybody! It’s Emily again and for my Tuesday tips I’m going to share my simple barbeque menu. You can whip this up in a few minutes, but you won’t be disappointed! Us Brits don’t get to see the sun very often, but we’ve been spoiled this week J and I’ve certainly been making the most of it!

Lemonade

4 lemons

100 grams of sugar

1 litre of water

Squeeze the juice from the lemons, put it in a jug with the water and sugar and give it a good stir, voila!

Or for a bit of a twist use 3 lemons and 2 limes.

Kofta Kebabs

500g lamb mince

1 small apple, grated

3 or 4 mint leaves, chopped

1 Clove garlic, chopped

1 tsp Cumin

1 tsp Coriander

Skewers (Soaked in water for about an hour)

Naan breads (To serve)

Lettuce, Cucumber, tomatoes (To serve)

Put all the ingredients in a bowl and mix well with your hands. Roll the mince into about twelve rugby ball shaped patties and put about three on each skewer. Cook them over the barbeque for about fifteen minutes until cooked thoroughly, and then serve in warm naan bread with salad.

Barbequed Bananas

1 Banana per person

Squeeze of honey

Melted chocolate

1 or 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream.

This one is so simple, when the barbeque has cooled down a little just put the banana’s on the barbeque in their skin for a few minutes. Then peel them, and serve straight away with a drizzle of honey and melted chocolate and some vanilla ice cream. You’ll be surprised at how filling this is, but the ice cream makes it a refreshing dessert!

Thank you all for reading! I hope you're all enjoying the summer!

Tuesday Tips - My books done, now what?

Welcome to Tuesday Tips! This is a weekly segment where some of the wonderful Beachwalk Press authors share some tips.

Today I thought I's share some tips for those who have a book they are working on or finished, and wondering what to do next.

  • Read it again! Put about a week between each read through of your own story, and be sure to read something else during that time to get the current manuscript out of your head. The key is for the manuscript to feel fresh when you read it to catch things you've missed.
  • Get a beta read: So you've read it more times than you want and you never want to read it again. Send it to someone you trust and will be honest with you. Someone who will find some loopholes. Be ready for criticism and don't get mad at that person about it.
  • Read it again! LOL - did you think this was over? Just hear me out. Send the story to your ereader, go lounge somewhere and read your story. Just have a note pad ready. Seeing your story in a different light will help you catch things also. Your story will read different.
  • Now, start to research publishers and when you find one you like, take a look at their submission guidelines and begin the process to submitting.
Good luck! Got a tip to share? I'd love to hear it!

Tuesday Tips

Now that summer is in full gear you probably find yourself getting invited to impromptu picnics and parties. I have two really quick and tasty appetizers that are perfect to take to the local BBQ or a girls night out party.

Both dips can be served with nacho style chips.

Sausage Dip

1 lb ground sausage (I use Jimmy Dean or Bob Evans)
2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese
1 (10 ounce) can Rotel,Tomatoes with Chili peppers (liquid drained out)

Brown sausage in skillet (drain grease).
Add cream cheese and cook over medium heat until melted.
Add Rotel and mix well.

Serve warm with chips.
***

If you thought the above recipe was simple wait until you see this one. It's always a huge hit too...

Salsa Dip

1 Jar Salsa
1 package cream cheese (softened)
Mix the two ingredients together and chill for two hours.

Serve with chips.

How easy are they?

Tuesday Tips

Hello everybody, me Emily again! Today I’m going to be talking all about time management. I have two children, my daughter is nearly a year and my son is two and a half. I’m doing a degree, I do work (occasionally) and I still have time to write. People say I’m crazy for taking on so much, and there was a point last year where I thought they were right, but then I just found a way to fit it all in, and I haven’t looked back. So here are my tips for getting everything done in a day.

1. Prioritise. For me, the most important thing I do is look after the children, so the first thing I do when I wake up is make sure they are happy and set for the day. They get all my attention in the morning, so after lunch their usually quite happy to play by themselves for a bit. Then with everything else, I make a list of what I need to do with my day, starting with the most important, and I work my way down. That way, at least I never fall behind with deadlines or anything.

2. Ten minutes here and there is better than nothing. Especially with studying, I used to think I had to sit down for hours and read all in one go, but now I read what I can, when I can, even if it’s just a paragraph between jobs, it’s better than nothing.

3. Don’t beat yourself up if things don’t get done! It’s not the end of the world if the house is left a mess for one day!

4. Know your limitations. I work from home as a manicurist, and when I first had my son I imagined I’d have a thriving business by now. But the reality is it’s difficult to do that kind of work with a child running around, let alone two. I still do treatments, but only for people I know, and only when my fiancé is around to look after the children. Anything else would probably be disastrous. It’s the same with writing, I know I don’t have the time to get a book released every month, so I set myself reasonable goals, as long as I stick to them, I’m happy.

5. When the children finally go to bed, the laptop comes out. This was so hard at first, but I made a strict rule that every night I do an hour of work for my degree, and then I get rewarded by writing. This works because my partner works late a lot, so once I got into the routine, I found it easy to stick to.

6. Give yourself time to relax. The old saying ‘a woman’s work is never done’ might be true, but make time for yourself as well. If you never relax you can get so tired that nothing with get done, so make it a rule to look after yourself too. Go for a walk, pamper yourself, try a new hobby or get back into a new one, but make sure you have fun!

Thank you all for reading and I really hope you’ve all enjoyed your Tuesday Tips from me.

Tuesday Tips... Tamaria's Strawberry Shortcake Delight

Hello, it's Tamaria here today and I'm going to share with you my recipe for the most amazing
Strawberry Shortcake you'll ever taste! The secret is cheesecake... sorta ;)
When I sold the Pampered Chef I came across many wonderful recipes and this one I came up with by combining what I liked of two different dessert recipes.

What you need:

Strawberries (washed and sliced)
1 tub of Cool Whip (thawed)
1 package of Cheesecake Jello Instant Pudding
Dessert cakes, angle food cake, or pound cake.
1 package of Strawberry Jello
1/2 cup of water
Strawberry Syrup optional

Step 1:

Dissolve Strawberry Jello in water (do not follow the instruction on the package) then add the strawberries. Let them soak.

Step 2:

Fold cool whip into a bowl and then add the dry Cheesecake pudding mix and stir until blended.

Step 3:

On a plate drizzle strawberry syrup (optional) then add your dessert cup, pound cake, or angle food cake.

Step 4:

Place a scoop of Cool whip/cheesecake filling on top then add the strawberries!

You may top it off with an aerosol whipped topping if you choose!

And then enjoy it!

If you would like me to post easy recipes over the summer just leave me a comment! I have hundreds of easy to make but you'll wow recipes!

Actually my husband and I used to go to this couples get together once a month and they had a dessert contest. After I won 4 months in a row they stopped having it!

Tuesday Tip - The Last Week of School Survival

Today's tips - How to Survive The End of the School Year Rush.

These tips are coming as I'm trying to get through it.

Tip 1 - Don't make any plans or even think you got it organized. You don't. Last minute school activities will come up. The kids will forget to tell you about at least one of them until that morning. Oh yes, that happened already this week.

Tip 2 - Don't think you'll get to relax before the kids get out. Sleep all day, bask in a quiet house to prepare yourself for the storm of children ahead. No, you'll find you're needed for this event, that ceremony, this party almost everyday on the week that leads up to---the end.

Tip 3 - Don't moan and groan about it. Once you're there, you'll have fun making these memories with your kids.

And finally, tip 4 - Be prepared for your kids to stop at nothing to convince you that they need to go home early with you. Even with the last day within sight, it's almost like their as desperate to be home with you, as you are for the nice relaxing day you had dreamed of.

Might as well plan for that relaxing day for the second day of the school  year. Because let's face it, day 1...brings a whole set of other excitement.

Tuesday Tips... writing on the go

Busy...busy..busy. Aren't we all? Being a full-time writer takes much discipline especially when you're raising two active boys.

For me, writing is an all day, everyday process. I try to devote most of the school day to my craft but there is also so much promotion involved with being an author. There are days I have to dedicate to marketing, writing guest posts, maintaining my pages and blogs, answering reader emails, sending out swag, interacting on FB and helping to promote fellow authors. What? I have to write a book too?

Somehow I manage to fit it all in and be a pretty good wife and mom too. ;) I just had to learn how to utilize all of my time.

Today I decided to share some of my on the go tips.

Always carry a notebook and pen - this is something I've done my whole life. I've been pretty fortunate that the voices inside my head never stop talking. I learned a long time ago you have to listen to them. I've been known to pull off on the side of the road or in a parking lot to jot down conversations. I started Crossfire of Love on my way to Macy's.

Netbook - this little tool comes in handy quite often. I get my hair cut and dyed every five weeks. That's a good forty-five minutes of solid writing time. I'm usually good for 2000 words while the dye does its thing.

Printer - this may seem old fashion for my generation of authors but I still print out three to four chapters at a time, stick them in my bag and edit whenever I can. I sit at several track, baseball and karate sessions several times a week. I always make good use of my time. Nothing more exhilarating than the thrill of a red pen.

Talk to those voices - Yes, I do mean out loud. I'm a dialog girl. I try to make my characters as realistic as possible. If it doesn't sound right coming out of my mouth then it won't work for my characters either.I hold whole conversations in the car. This probably would have been awkward about five years ago but thanks to Bluetooth no one even bats an eye when I'm stopped at a red light and gabbing to myself.

Hot Shower - Some of my best ideas are born in the shower. Nothing like a hot and steamy romp to get those creative juices flowing. I came up with the idea for Make Me Stay one cold January night. Of course I would advise getting dried off and dressed before putting your words to paper. I usually hop out, sit on my bed wrapped in a towel and type what I've come up with. Sometimes I glance at the clock and wonder how my hair is dry and its two hours later.

Well, there we are. I may be a little obsessive when it comes to my writing. I never shut it down. It works for me. I love my job ;) Hopefully I've helped. I'd love to hear some of your on the go tips for writing.

Tuesday Tips for the Driving Impaired

Hi there!  Tara Mills again.

I always scramble to come up with something for blog posts. Tuesday tips can really send me into a spin. What can I possibly know that might actually be of some interest to people?  What am I confident about? Then it hit me. Oh yeah ... driving.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not suggesting that I'm a great driver, though I am a relatively safe one.  My kids have teased that an old lady could pass me.  Not so.  I've been known to put my foot down on occasion, usually when I'm afraid my bladder is going to burst. Yep, I've been pulled over for speeding a few times, never given a ticket -- even got a compliment once from an officer for actually getting my kid into his car seat properly.  Hey, I'm a blonde and I know how to use it.

I've earned a few tickets, but luckily, never had to pay one. Wait, once, but that was just a parking ticket.  My meter ran out near the hospital while I was delivering a baby upstairs.  Plugging a few extra quarters in that puppy was the last thing on my mind at the time and I don't think I would have let my husband go do it without causing him serious bodily harm.

So, what's the point of all this babbling?  Glad you asked.  I'm going to tell you my secrets for getting by with no road skills whatsoever. Are you ready?  And away we go!  Don't worry, I'm not driving.

First Rule: Note Landmarks.  I was born without an inner compass.  It's true. I think they skip generations. I still refer to north as up and south as down. East and west go without saying. I navigate by landmarks. Who has the time to read signs?  They don't help anyway.

We moved to a different city once and I had to find my way home from the store.  I got so lost -- ended up on the freeway.  Before every overpass I'd see these signs saying, to take the first exit for north, or the second exit for south. Not much help when you have no idea where you are.  So I drove, and drove, and drove. The groceries were warm before I finally found my way home. I did talk myself into turning back eventually, but I wasn't confident about it.  Luckily, I recognized the lake we lived on when I approached it from the opposite direction.  See, landmarks.  Always note landmarks.

Second Rule: Parking.  I don't know why they don't simply paint all the stripes in a parking lot at an angle. Why this nasty crosshatch pattern?  I want a smart car just so I know I'm going to have plenty of space on both sides of me.  Unfortunately, we own a big V-6 pick-up with a topper and a lot of blind spots. And a dirty back window. It's always dirty. Can't help that when you live on gravel roads. I don't envy the next driver to pull that sponged squeegee out of the basket at the gas station when I'm finished with it.  Yep, my glass is all scratched now too. Sorry about that, but at least I can see you.  See, silver linings. I'm all about silver linings.

Anyway, back to parking. I have parallel parked exactly three times in my life -- only during my driver's license tests. Yes, I've taken  the test three times. I hit the parking flags the first time and had an emotional meltdown on the guy administering my test. The second time, I think he leaped into the bushes when he saw me coming so I'd be someone else's problem.  My parking job wasn't pretty, and I was quite a distance from the curb, but he looked at the wide space, looked at me, and decided it would do.  I think they may have talked about me and decided no one wanted to deal with me a third time.  Too bad that didn't work out for them.  He passed me by two points. I actually did go back to them a third time. I'd moved, didn't get my renewal notice, and the time ran out.  I chose to drive the two plus hours just so I could take the test in a familiar place, with those same friendly people.  Ha!

How did I stray off topic?  So anyway, I'll bet you're wondering how I avoid parallel parking?  Well, first of all, I don't drive unless there's a desperate need or pressure put on me to do it. Usually it's not my problem.  On those rare occasions when I've been forced to find a parking space, I'm willing to drive around and around. I'll park down empty streets a good distance from where I need to be as long as I don't have to maneuver my way into a space. I'd much rather hoof it.  I also look for lots and ramps then choose the spaces farthest from other vehicles so it doesn't look terrible when I coax my way in, throw it in reverse, straighten my wheels, take another shot at it, back up again, pull forward, open my door, and see I'm still crowding the line and my back end is angled.  Here's where you should crane your neck, look around for witnesses then simply leave the car exactly where it is.  Gas it too expensive to sweat the small stuff.  As long as no one else's car is in danger, you should be willing to call it good.

Tuesday Tips

Hi everybody, it me Emily again! As well as writing and being a mother, I’m also a student. So today I thought I’d talk about some of the things I had to think about when I decided to go back into education, and my tips are about some things you could consider if you’re thinking you might want to do a course J

1) If you’re not sure that you can fit it into your busy life, explore your options… instead of doing the usual three year degree, I’m doing mine over six years. That way, I only do one module at a time and the assignments don’t pile up at a rate I can’t deal with. You have to be strict with yourself. For me, working around children, I have to make sure that I’m getting work done every night when their little heads hit their pillows. At first, this was tough, it was the last thing I wanted to do after a busy day, but once you get into the swing of things it’s not too difficult, and on days when I haven’t managed to get much else done, it feels great to do something productive.

2) Where can you do it? Sometimes five days in college or university just isn’t practical, especially if you have a full time job to work around, but it’s not impossible. So many places offer distance learning courses, or night classes. Go to open days and see what's on offer, it might surprise you just how many things are available these days.

3) Make use of the support, whether it’s from other students, your tutors or from family or friends. It doesn’t always take somebody who’s got a qualification in the subject you’re studying to help you out. If you’re finding something tough, sometimes all it takes is a different perspective to make everything seem a lot clearer.

4) I think this is the most important thing. Choose something you really want to do. If you’re making to decision to go back into education, you’re going to be a lot more committed to something that you actually enjoy rather than something you feel like you should study. Think about what you want to achieve with your life, and what’s going to really help you get there, and then go for it.

5) Believe in yourself. You can do it!
Thank you all for reading. Have a great Tuesday!

Tuesday Tips

I've noticed a trend here recently on Tuesday Tips. We've been talking cleaning. And today is no different.
Spring has sprung and with windows opening, we are seeing more of those dust bunnies popping out.

I am someone who cleans all year, a little more than the usual basic pick-up/cleaning. But in the spring, its a good time to get to those things you put off:

  • The blinds. Those things sit there and collect dust and is there really any easy way to clean them? No idea! Got any tips? (snickers) I usually dust them well and spot clean them, because otherwise its a nasty mess if you didn't get all the dust off. Growing up, my mom took them down and let them soak in the bathtub all morning and dry on the driveway all afternoon. Never tried this, but she might be on to something.
  • Light fixtures. Once again, get a hot soapy mixture going and plop them into the sink or tub and let them soak.
  • Cabinets. This is something I do weekly since mine are white, but in my previous house they were dark wood and they were ignored. Its a good time to wipe them down...inside an out.
  • Baseboards. Man...those things can get dirty quick. Also when vacuuming  take the time to take the attachment off and run it along the board to get dirt.
  • The top of the fridge. This is something I used to do sparingly  Probably not even once a year. Well, when we moved last year and I climbed up the step stool to clean out the cupboard above. Holy Cow!! There was a layer of dust that I had to SCRUB off it. It was horrible.
  • And the last place...under the bed. Pull everything out, take the mattresses off, and vacuum out those bunnies. They really like going under there.
