Looking for Love

Hi, I'm Tara Mills and I'm a shy introvert with sexy tastes. I'm a bookish girl. I love to read them and love to write them. What I don't enjoy is stepping into the limelight and singing for attention. It's hard for me. I would love it if my books got more attention without forcing me out of my shell. Unfortunately, that can't and won't happen. So, I'm stepping outside my comfort zone and putting on my game face.

The truth is, there are a lot of authors out there, and more releases coming daily. It's hard to make a noticeable splash in a rainstorm over an ocean. There's noise, commotion, and raindrops fall so fast they tend to blur into one curtain of gray.

As a reader, I know how daunting it can be to find the right authors for you. I understand the challenges of locating stories that will make a deep impression on you and remain long after you've set the book aside. The kinds of stories you'll reach for again and again. Somehow this particular author connected with you. Or that story touched you, or entertained you in a significant way.

Writers love it when you read and enjoy our work. We greatly appreciate it when you write warm reviews. You've made our day when we hear you've recommended us, or something we've written, to others. And yes, even shy authors love to connect with their readers. We want to hear from you. Tell us how much you loved our book(s).

Most of us have author pages on Facebook so if you are on Facebook, like their pages. And yes, say hello. We're more than happy to return the greeting. Our author pages aren't simply for promotion and getting word out on our latest news. It's where we hope to connect with you, our readers.

Let me invite you to my Facebook page. I hope to see you there. Tara Mills

Teaser from Caution: Filling is Hot

I thought it would be fun to post a teaser from Caution: Filling is Hot. Enjoy.

Piper smiled. “That’s awesome. You’re going to feel right at home, but if you’re new to cooking, no worries, you’re in for a real treat. Tonight we’re going to make muffins and you’re going to see just how easy cooking can be. But here’s the most important rule, you should never cook without an adult around, okay?”

Catching movement out of the corner of her eye, Piper turned and saw that Hot Stuff was back. He shifted on his stool to see around the woman in front of him and that was it. Their eyes locked and every thought in her head left on a coffee break without a backward shrug. Wonderful.

Then he abruptly broke their connection, releasing Piper because, because there was a small girl tugging on his sleeve? No way. Yes, apparently, way. The girl cupped her mouth and whispered in his ear. He nodded back and was right in the middle of his reply when they both vanished, blocked by a woman with a spectacular perm seated in front of them.

Piper gave herself a mental head slap. How did she manage to miss Mr. Marvelous on her way in? Wait a second, hold it. What was she doing? Duh! Class. Teaching. Focus.

The delay cost her. Half a heartbeat later he leaned back into the aisle, located Piper, and reclaimed her attention. Caught like a fish on his hook, she tried to fight herself free without success. Not until he gave her a slow, intimate smile did she manage it, the annoyance that smile provoked finally snapping his line.

Wrenching her eyes away, Piper skidded over the other heretofore unnoticed child at his table. Appalled by her lousy powers of observation, her face warmed another five degrees. She was out of control. Seriously out of control. It was intolerable. She wasn’t going to put up with this.

So what if he’d brought along a pint-sized entourage? It didn’t change the fact she was there to do a job. Still, she couldn’t tamp down her resentment. The jerk was toast. Burnt toast! She should have known things would crap out tonight as soon as she broke the jar of applesauce. Talk about your bad omens.

She needed to get a grip, take back the reins, and run the guy down. Mmm, not a bad fantasy actually. She wasn’t going to lose this power struggle. No way. Piper regulated her breathing and took a second to stretch her arms toward the floor, tightening her muscles and extending her fingers until even the skin burned. Only then did she trust herself to speak.

With a stiff smile for her staring class, Piper returned to the job at hand. “Normally I’d simply demonstrate for you, but tonight we’re going to do something different. You’ll be working in teams and everyone will have a chance to participate. Now, I’d like someone from each station to come up and get the supplies you’ll need.”

A murmur of voices filled the room and then each group dispatched someone to the counter to collect their boxes of ingredients.

She tried to ignore her personal pest when he stood to come forward, but a nasty impulse took over when he got up there and Piper couldn’t help sneering, “What did you do? Rent a couple of kids for the night?”

He turned, his eyes dancing with amusement, and smiled. “No, they’re mine.”

Piper’s eyebrows scrambled up her forehead. Why did that news throw her? She stared after him as he walked back to his children, and then she did yet another unthinkable thing—she checked out his ass. Great idea! Why not just add an erratic heart rate to go with everything else?

Tantalizing Tuesday-Caution: Filling is Hot by Tara Mills

Some men should come with a warning.

Welcome to another Tantalizing Tuesday. Allow me to turn up the heat with a sexy excerpt and hopefully leave you hungry for more. This is from my next release, Caution: Filling is Hot, coming out on March 17th with Beachwalk Press. Enjoy.

Sneak Peek:

“Listen, I should have thanked you for tonight. I had a nice time.” Piper’s lame attempt at defusing the tension was obvious.
Chad nodded, his heavenly eyes considering her thoughtfully.
Nervous perspiration started to trickle out of her pores. “And you have two really great kids. Say goodnight for me, would you?”
He nodded again. “Why are you running, Piper?” His voice was so soft, so low it was almost a whisper. He leaned closer, forcing her to look up at him.
Her eyes darted to the right when she tried to deny it. “I’m not.”
“Oh, that was convincing.” He chuckled. “Can we cut the bullshit? You do something to me. Clearly, I’m affecting you. I think we owe it to ourselves to explore it—together.”
Piper couldn’t formulate a single coherent thought when he was practically touching her, crowding her like this. Chad was much too close, too warm. Way too appealing. The intoxicating smell of him insinuated itself into her nose like a drug and pumped her already careening blood flow even faster through her body.
His control astounded her. There she was practically firing flames from her fingertips, and he was the definition of cool. She held her breath when he slowly tipped her chin up then lowered his mouth to hers. Piper found herself responding, unable to do anything else. When he eased back his eyes still held hers, a captured thing. She only had time enough for one quick intake of air before he dove again and swallowed the breath right out of her.
This kiss was harder, more demanding, and Piper rode the curve of the car like a chamois cloth as he bent her backward. Chad’s body molded itself to hers, pressed tight while his fingers combed through her hair. When he finally moved back, he brought Piper with him, returning her to an upright position. Her legs buckled.
“Whoa there,” he said, catching her.
He pulled her door open and Piper dropped weakly onto the seat and stared up at him with dazed eyes.
“Where are your keys?” Chad’s question barely penetrated her mental fog.
Piper pulled them from her purse and started the engine.
Chad watched her, concern etched on his face. “Hey, are you going to be okay?”
She nodded, completely rattled and not entirely sure what he just asked.
“Open your window. I think you need the air.” He smiled and closed the door for her.
Piper lowered the glass and looked up at him, her fog of confusion beginning to clear.
He leaned in. “Be safe. I’ll call you.”
“Okay,” she mumbled.

Piper stared in confusion at her steering wheel. She’d lost her marbles! Where the hell was she going again? Oh right, home, she needed to get home. She hoped she could find her way back from here. She couldn’t believe how he’d completely rearranged her gray matter with a kiss.

Blurb:

Here’s a recipe to share with friends. Take one prickly demonstration cook, handle carefully. Add one lonely widower, slightly beaten. Mix gently. Fold in two six-year-olds, one at a time to temper the batter and avoid scrambling. Then finally, add the mother with an agenda—but just a dash because she’s spicy. Whip into stiff peaks then spread over an ungreased sheet for best results. Method of cooking can vary, however--Caution: Filling is Hot.

Piper Frost is taking a break from men when contractor Chad Thomas crashes her cooking class and turns on the charm. His persistence annoys her but she’s already melting, even without his sneaky mother and conspiring twins in the mix. But just when things are really starting to sizzle, disaster strikes. Can Piper save her recipe for happily ever after or is it already ruined? Grab your oven mitts and find out.

Breaking my rules

My grandson has been staying with us since Tuesday. I knew I'd get very little done, writing-wise, while he's here. He's toddling around now and interested in everything. The oddest things seem to fascinate him. There is no keeping one step ahead of him. There is only damage control.

Kids can flummox routines, interfere with sleep, and gum up the romantic juices. Their needs come first so everything else gets shunted aside. This is why I've long thought kids, particularly babies don't belong in a romance novel. I'm not particularly enthralled by impish cuties or precocious tots. That's not the relationship I want to focus on in a love story.

Why am I telling you this? Because I broke my own rule, that's why. One day, I heard about a young mother killed in a car crash during morning rush hour. That was all it took. My mind immediately went to her poor husband and what he was about to face alone. With no forewarning, this man was suddenly a grief-stricken widower and single parent. All his plans and imaginings of their perfect future together were gone in a puff of smoke and twisted metal on that freeway. It only takes a minute to unmake a good man.

I found his story so compelling, I had to write it. Not only that, having been robbed of his happily-ever-after, through no fault of his own, I wanted to right that wrong and give him another shot at happiness and love.

This is how Chad Thomas was born. I didn't make it easy on him of course. There's always bumps in the road to love. His road more than most. But he's a very deserving fellow, not to mention easy on the eyes, which explains the title. His relationship with, and the insight he gets from his kids along the way actually added something wonderful and rich to his pursuit of the heroine, Piper Frost.

Caution: Filling is Hot was one of my earliest stories and remains one of my favorites. I truly bonded with these characters.

I'm delighted to announce, Caution: Filling is Hot will be coming from Beachwalk Press in 2014. I'll explain more about this upcoming title in future posts, but for now, I simply wanted to share my good news.
