Merry Christmas Everybody!

 

Is it really that time of year again? Okay, I know it gets said a lot but this year really has flown! Maybe it’s because I’ve been so busy, our wedding in the summer,  a house move which came out of the blue, and some personal stuff that took a lot of time to get my head around. This has got to be one of the most turbulent years I can remember, there have been ups and downs, but as a family we’ve pulled together and I know it’s definitely made us stronger. I’m really looking forward to what next year brings, feeling more inspired and motivated not just to write, but just to get out there and seize the day.

Before welcoming in a new year though, I plan to celebrate Christmas in style. For the first time it will be me that cook the HUGE family dinner for everybody. My cupboards are bursting with food, my dining table is overflowing with Christmas crafts that my children have been making, I have Christmas tunes playing like they’re going out of fashion and I can’t remember the last time I was this excited for Christmas day. Of course, I’m not the best cook in the world…so I don’t imagine that this will go off without a hitch, but regardless I’m looking forward to a day filled with family fun. I hope you all have a great one too! Merry Christmas everybody!

Now for some me time?

I'm pretty sure I can hear a collective sigh of relief from stressed out parents everywhere as children return to school after the summer holidays. Now I really enjoyed every moment of having my little man home, but it's funny how quickly you get used to a couple of hours peace and quiet where you can crack on with some writing.
Having said that, the summer is usually quite a productive time for me because I'm on a break from university. This year though, everything seems to have broken at once, laptop, printer, scanner, and my phone isn't even working properly. It's funny because, being forced to take a step back for a couple of weeks has really made me feel fresh and inspired, and now that everything's back and working as it should do, I just can't wait to get my ideas down!
So I have a month of relative peace and quite, with my laptop returned to me, in which I can finally get some work done on my WIP's...after that I'll be starting my fourth year of uni. This year I'll be learning ancient Greek. Wish me luck!

Tantalizing Tuesday - Let It Burn

This weeks Tantalizing Tuesday is a snippet from my brand new release Let It Burn! Here you go...

 

"Thank you for tonight," Lydia finally managed to say. Her voice was low with the hormones running rampage around her body.

Ryan turned to her with his face half hidden in shadow, his gaze lazy, as if she’d just woken him from a really good dream. The effect on her was out of this world, and as a fire began inside of her she had to remind herself to breathe. "I wasn’t sure you were enjoying yourself earlier."

"I was just taking it all in," Lydia told him. She stared down at her hands, trying to get a grip on the sudden onslaught of emotions she felt.

She could feel him staring at her until she was forced to look back at him. His gray eyes almost glowed like the moon in the darkness. "You are quite the enigma, Lydia James."

"I wouldn’t say that." She let out a little laugh. Next to him, she was pretty simple. Trying to figure out what was going through Ryan Sharpe’s brain was something else. She didn’t need to guess what his hungry looks meant, but beyond that he was as mysterious as they came.

"Well, I would." He leaned in closer. So close she couldn’t help but inhale his spicy scent. "And I’m looking forward to every moment of unraveling you."

Lydia closed her eyes and let his words wash over her. All she could do was absorb every feeling he awoke in her. Oh, she was becoming unraveled all right. It felt as if every nerve ending was tingling, and was almost more than she could bear. Get a grip, woman! It had obviously been way too long since she’d had that kind of fun. Then again, who wouldn’t lose their heads around somebody who looked like they’d been carved by the gods themselves?

"Ahem." Lydia’s eyelids flew open as another voice broke into their private little bubble. "We’re here."

Ah, so they were! Lydia was glad it was so dark that Ryan wouldn’t see her blush once again, because she’d totally forgotten for a moment that Tony was sitting inches away from them in the front seat.

"I guess we’d better go and do something about these clothes then," Ryan said. His gaze was trained on hers, and his voice gave away nothing at all. It was an invitation if she’d ever heard one.

"I guess we better had."

I have always believed that the best stories are the ones that you can't put down, the ones that transport you to a different place and make you believe in the characters. This is exactly why I write… I have always loved the escapism that reading and writing provides, and there is nothing more exciting than imagining your own set of characters, and then letting them practically write the story for you. Writing has always been a dream of mine, and I'm lucky to have the kind of people around me that have always nurtured and encouraged my passion.

I live a cozy little life in Wales, and when I'm not writing I'm taking care of my young family and studying for a degree in Classical Studies. I love traveling to new places, meeting new people, and experiencing new things…it's all great inspiration for my books!

A Beachwalk Wedding

Hello everybody! Sorry I've been a little out of touch recently, but I've been super busy organising my very own fairy tale ending. Just one more week to go until I OFFICIALLY become Mrs Wood.
Since I've got wedding bells very much on my mind, I was going to write a post about my very favourite romance novel weddings, but in the end the choice began to get a little bit heart breaking, far too many choices to come up with a favourite five. So instead I'm going to give you my top five wedding films...all of which I intend to watch this week!

The Wedding Crashers

 

A favourite admittedly because I had a bit of an odd crush on Owen Wilson when this came out. Also Isla Fisher's slightly crazy performance still makes me laugh every time!

Meet The Parents

 

 

At first this film used to really annoy me. I watched it and thought that Greg was a bit spineless, but it won me over when I watched it a second time. Definitely a film that makes me appreciate that our families get along!

 

My Best Friend's Wedding

 

 

I've always loved that this isn't a typical romance. It's about a woman accepting that she missed her chance, but appreciating what she has despite that. Cameron Diaz's off-key singing is just a plus, not just a funny film moment but a great message - who cares if your not perfect?

 

 

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

 

Definitely nearly my favourite. This film always leaves me feeling warm inside, love that the bride is a real woman, not Hollywood perfect, but doesn't need to change at all because he loves her just the way she is...family and all.

 

 

The Proposal

 

 

For me this is the film where it became okay to have a little bit of a crush on Ryan Reynolds. This isn't just my favourite wedding films, but my go-to film whenever I'm feeling down. I've always loved Sandra Bullocks humour, but the most touching scene in the whole film is when she talks about her parents, makes me teary eyed every time!

Tantalizing Tuesday - Business and Pleasure

So what now? Mia wondered as she finished up in her en-suite. She slicked on some extra lip gloss and pouted at herself in the mirror. Hesitating for a second, she slipped off her panties and bra so that she was just wearing her light dress and heels. There was no denying what was building between them.

 

 

As Mia left her room, she heard a soft whisper beckoning her from down the hall. "Mia." She turned to see Lawrence leaning his back against a doorframe, looking uncharacteristically boyish. His face was playful. "I don’t believe I showed you my room when I gave you the tour earlier."

Mia felt a wave of desire wash over her, but there was also something else, not so pleasant, which she couldn’t quite place. She swallowed and tried to forget about it, it was too late to turn back now.

Lawrence’s room was huge, and she swore he must have gotten his bed custom made, because she didn’t even know that they came in that size. Like the dining room earlier, the room was filled with candles and smelled faintly of vanilla. Lawrence sat on the edge of the bed and reached for her hand, pulling her toward him. He pulled her onto his lap and kissed her gently on the mouth, his eyes burned into her with longing, triggering her own reaction. She felt a tingling between her lips and kissed him back with vigor.

"You’re so beautiful." Lawrence breathed in her ear. "I wanted to take this slow, but…" He didn’t need to explain as she touched the hard-on straining against his jeans.

My amazing mother

One thing I can say about my mum is that she's lived her life to the fullest. I know how lucky I am to have such a close family, and she is everybody's rock. Even know she runs around after her girls, looking after my three nephews every day so that my sisters can work, and honestly I don't know how she does it, but I guess when you've lived your life like hers, resting and relaxing after she'd retired just wasn't an option.
When mum was just fifteen years old, she literally ran away and joined the circus. Okay, she told her parents she was going, but they didn't have much choice in the matter. She travelled through Spain for nearly two years, becoming fluent in Spanish, she travelled some of Europe, and eventually travelled to Africa. When my sisters and I used to look through the photographs and think how exotic it was to have a trapeze artist as a mother she would shake her head and tell us it was actually very hard work. Still, it had it's perks, she even got to adopt a tiny lion cub for a little while.
Mum's adventures didn't end when she met my father. Her days of flinging herself from a trapeze may have been over, but she wasn't satisfied with just settling down and having children, she fostered for many years, well into my childhood. She tells us now that it was the hardest thing she has ever done, and that we shouldn't even consider it, because it's heart breaking. Yet I see the men and women she fostered, as adults, still turning to her for advice, still sending cards every birthday, and I know that she and my dad did a pretty special thing.
So thanks mum, not just for the exciting true stories you told us as children, but for all the lessons and values you taught us. I'm a mother myself now, and if I can do even half as good a job as she did, I think I'll be doing okay.

Happy Easter everybody!

 

I love Easter. That may have quite a lot to do with it being perfectly acceptable to eat your own body weight in chocolate every meal time, but also I just love the feeling of spring and new beginnings. Easter has always been quite a big deal for my family, because it’s the only time apart from Christmas that we will all get together every year.

I’m hosting the family meal this year. My fridge is packed full of…well only simple things that I’m sure I can cook, since I’m not really going to be competing with Delia anytime soon. I feel like I’ve been spring cleaning for weeks, probably because with two small children, I have to clean the same area over and over and over again. It’s alright though, I enlisted the little loves, and we have Bunny themed paper chains streaming from anywhere I can hang them, we have a basket with felt-tip coloured polystyrene eggs in the window…

Wait? Did I just say eggs?

Ah yes, of course, me being me, there would be something essential I left until the last minute to get. Cue hours of trawling around every shop in town gathering the best of the left over Easter eggs in the hopes that nobody will notice their battered state and wonder why I chose the rejects. Still, family gatherings of a very big family were always going to be chaotic and guess what, I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Tantalizing Tuesday - The Right Kind of Wrong by Emily Wood

Hello everybody! Welcome back to Tantalizing Tuesday. I’m so excited to share a teaser from the third book in my series, The Right Kind of Wrong. Hope you enjoy ;)

Excerpt: "You seem nervous," Jamie said, taking her hand, which was physically shaking.

"I…I haven’t touched a man since my husband and I separated," Harriet admitted.

Jamie’s eyebrows shot up in surprise. "You seem too young to have been married already."

"Yes, well, it didn’t work out," Harriet said bitterly. She looked away, trying to push down the emotions that threatened to resurface—rejection, abandonment, the feeling of never being good enough. But she was good at controlling the pain by now; she’d been doing it ever since she was a child.

"I’m sorry." The fire between them was in danger of fizzling out as they stood there awkwardly, but then Jamie kissed her hand. "Anybody would be a fool to leave you."

Jamie pulled her closer and started kissing her again. He tasted of beer, and Harriet hated the taste usually, but like with everything else, he made the wrong seem so right, and she loved it.

She kissed him like she couldn’t get enough. Boldly, Harriet raised her hands up to cup his face, the beginnings of stubble feeling grainy against her palms. She was more turned on than she could remember. Harriet pulled away, suddenly nervous. It wasn’t like her to do things like this, and it scared her just how much she wanted it.

"It’s okay, we don’t have to take this any further. We don’t really know each other," Jamie said a little breathlessly.

Harriet tried to hide her disappointment, but she knew he was right, and she wasn’t the kind of girl to be this forward.

"But I’m up for it if you are." Jamie’s voice was more serious, and his words sent waves of desire through her body.

Given her tendency to overthink things into inaction, she decided to let her body take over. There were a hundred reasons why she shouldn’t do this, but she was going to go with the one reason she should—she wanted to.

Harriet initiated the next kiss in response, and this time she ran her hands through his hair, pulling him down to her, making it so that he knew exactly what she wanted. Jamie responded with passion. He pulled her against his body. Nerves and excitement were a heady mix, and before too long, Harriet was gasping for breath between kisses, wishing he would take the next step.

"Do you want to come upstairs?" Harriet asked eventually, when it was obvious he wasn’t going to push this. She felt brazen. This was so unlike her!

"Only if you want me to." Jamie was such a contradiction. He looked every inch the bad boy, and yet there he was acting almost like a gentleman, when it was obvious what he wanted.

Now Harriet had pulled away from him, she felt a little awkward. Without leading him, or so much as looking at him, she left the room and started heading up the stairs. Only at the top did she peek behind her to make sure he was following. Harriet walked into the large bedroom that she had shared with her husband. It was perfectly symmetrical, and everything was black and white, not a splash of color to decorate it.

Jamie stopped at the door. "It looks like a showroom. I don’t want to mess it up." Harriet didn’t relish the thought of it being messed up either, but with what she was anticipating, that was going to be inevitable.

Life's little luxuries

When you read a lot of somebody’s work, you start to get a feel for the things they like, and the things they really hate, the things they have a bee in their bonnet about. I was reading a book recently and smiled when I saw something they’ve mentioned before. I’m pretty sure if I sent her this item as a gift she’d be over the moon. It got me thinking, especially as I’m working on a WIP that features a very lavish hotel, they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, is luxury too? I know it’s sparing no expense, but can it just something that is slightly better than our expectations?

You think of a posh celebration and champagne and caviar comes to mind. Now, I’m a lover of red wine, but champagne…meh, I can take it or leave it. Yet it’s always prominent in my books if I’m trying to create that extravagant vibe. Caviar, no thanks, I don’t think I could think of anything worse.

For me, at the moment, a treat is a bubble bath and a nice cup of tea, five minutes to myself. My friend is arranging a spa day for us, and to me that’s probably the most exciting thing that’s happened for a while, to her, it’s a weekly essential.

So when I’m creating characters (especially ones that are far richer than myself), half my time goes into really trying to get inside their heads and figuring out what would really be something special for them and what would just be the norm.

How about you, if somebody told you they were taking you away for a luxury weekend away, what type of thing would you expect or want?

Love is in the air!

These last couple of weeks have been tough. Juggling a degree, writing and children is hard at the best of times, but it’s seemed almost impossible this week while my partner has been working away. Luckily I’ve managed most things, although it always seems to be my writing that has to be set aside while I deal with everything else. My partner’s absence has really made me think about what really matters in relationships, and I think supporting your partners dreams is really up there for me. It’s easy to tell somebody you’ll be there or that whisper words of encouragement, but I’m lucky to have somebody who always goes that extra mile for me, really helping me when I need it, and not being afraid to argue and make me see sense every time I’m ready to give things up. Some people probably see it as the other way around, that I stayed at home to raise our children while he focused on his career but honestly, I know how lucky I am.

 

Now you’re probably thinking, what’s with the soppy blog post? Well apart from the fact I miss him, here in Wales, we have another Patron Saint of Love besided Saint Valentines and that is Saint Dwynwen. And St Dwynwen’s day falls tomorrow! I’ll be honest, it’s not something I usually celebrate but I thought it would be nice to welcome my fiancé home with a little surprise this weekend instead of waiting for Valentines. For anybody who gets fed up with the hype surrounding the 14^th of Feb, why not join us Welshies and have your own little celebration tomorrow?

What does your 2014 look like?

Well hello everybody. Welcome to a brand new year! Yes I know we're over a week into it now, but this is my first post of 2014, and this year I'm making a resolution to not make resolutions. Basically I think I had a mini meltdown last summer, with work, my degree, and writing, not to mention my two lovely, but very demanding children. I think it had got to the point where I'd put so much pressure on myself that I wasn't even enjoying the time I spent writing like I used to.
That said, this year I will try my best to get things done, and I'm sure you'll be pleased to know that even though I didn't do much submitting last year, I got back in the right frame of mind, and did do a lot of writing. Only problem I have now is my overactive imagination meant that my list of unfinished WIPs just keeps getting growing and growing. Well that just will not do! This year I plan to submit at least one of them to my very favourite publisher ;) and I *hope* to submit it soon.
So what else does 2014 have in store for this writer? My not so little man will be starting school, big step for us, and one that will hopefully mean I get to spend more time tapping away on my laptop.
There are also a few weddings filling up my calendar, one of which is my mine, Whoop! My own little romantic fairy tale coming true.
And finally I really want to spend a lot more time in 2014 getting to know YOU, other writers, bloggers and especially readers that make our little Beachwalk community the best place on the web to hang out!

Holiday Recipes: Emily Wood's Pumpkin and Sultana Muffins

Ingredients:
2 cups self-raising flour
3/4 cup dark muscovado sugar
60g (1/4 cup) butter (melted)
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp mixed spice
3/4 cup sultanas
1 cup mashed pumpkin
3/4 cup milk
1 large egg

1. Preheat the oven to 210°C (410°F). Grease a 12-hole muffin tin.
2. Sift the flour, baking powder, and mixed spice into a large bowl, add the sugar and sultanas and mix well.
3. Beat the egg and add to the dry ingredients with the milk, butter and pumpkin. Stir until ingredients are combined, but don’t over-mix.
4. Spoon mixture into the prepared tin. Bake for about twenty minutes, or until golden brown and springy to touch. Turn out onto a wire rack to cool.

This recipe is also great with prunes or dates instead of sultanas, but since many children won’t eat them, this is the go-to recipe in my house!

Romantic Getaway Wishlist

My mind has been on a holiday for a while. In the summer I get married and since we have two young children, we decided to go without a honeymoon for the time being. It makes better sense to go in a couple of years when I’m driving my husband crazy by phoning home every two minutes to make sure their okay. Still, a girl can dream, and while I’ve been writing my latest WIP I’m finding myself living vicariously through my characters, Fiona and Ethan, who are taking some time away to work on their marriage.

Since I am dreaming, I thought I’d share with you my top five romantic getaways, which I am determined to visit at some point during my life. Here they are…

Belgium

As I was telling you in my post two weeks ago, I just love Winter, and I can hardly think of anything that would be cuter than visiting a Belgian Christmas market with my partner. Ever since watching In Bruges (the actual storyline of that film aside) I’ve been enchanted by the fairytale-esque scenery, and know it would just be perfect for a Winter’s break. And of course, a cheeky chocolate shopping foray would be in order, after all, it would be rude not to!

Paris

This probably doesn’t even need an explanation. It just feels like somewhere you should go as a couple. Again, I imagine going there when it’s snowing, although travelling might be a bit of a nightmare. But hey, if we’re stuck in a place where I can enjoy croissants with my coffee until I’m fit to burst you won’t find me complaining, and if the romance of the city just happens to rub off on us, so much the better ;)

Venice

Yes, I have been here before, but anybody who knows me or has read Business and Pleasure probably knows I’m in love with Italy. Venice might just be my favourite place in the world, whether it’s crowded with tourists, packed with merchants selling me things I really don’t want, slowly sinking into the sea or lit up in the black of night like tinsel town, I’ll take it. It would be an amazing place to experience with my fiancé, and an equally exotic setting for a romance novel.

The Swiss Alps

We did have a plan, a few years ago, to go on a skiing holiday. My mother turned pale when I told her, my dad immediately started looking up the best insurance policies before we’d even booked the thing. Clumsy doesn’t even begin to describe how accident prone I am, and I don’t think anybody else in the world would put up with me on a holiday like that except for my fiancé. Anyway, we never got around to booking since I found out I was pregnant with my son a couple of days later. It would still be incredible to go there one day.

Africa

I’ve always wanted to do something breath taking with my partner. My mother lived in Africa for a few years when she was a girl. She was part of a circus and I’ve never grown tired of hearing all about her adventures, so much so I’ve always dreamed of having some of my own, and visiting the places she’s always talked about. I don’t think there could be anything more romantic than making the memories of a lifetime with the person you love.
