Moving The Goals

Happy Friday and welcome to my first post of the New Year!

I must admit I'm not a huge fan of January. It always seems pretty anti climatic after a hectic festive period in which there aren't enough hours in the day, or enough food. January often brings a financial overhaul, the urge to redecorate the now bare looking, unadorned room, and the influx of 'diet now' articles and adverts. I hid my favourite chocolates, so I can't possibly diet yet!

Last year I was hugely optimistic about 2014 and set myself goals and a list of New Year resolutions. Most of which didn't happen how ever hard I tried to achieve them. In theory they should. After all I'm a list maker and the forward planner of the family. I get twitchy about what's coming next. This time I'm starting the year in a different ways. I'm winging it. I have removed the goals and I'm going to see where it takes me. I figure if I hadn't focused so much on last years goals, I could've opened myself up to more possibilities without the virtual constraints of the goalposts. In theory this year there should be no failure and any achievements coming my way will be an added bonus. That's my only plan anyway!

Good morning and welcome to Tantalizing Tuesday. Today I'm sharing an excerpt of my latest release, Dating in the Dark, Book 1 in the Sweet Delights Series.

    “I need something delicious and naughty,” Sophie Rose said, exaggerating each word slowly, lacing each syllable with a need that said she wanted it now. Because she did. Badly. “Something rich and decadent that will melt on my tongue so I can taste it all day. And please, please—make it huge.”
    “Would you like that with or without cream?” a husky, very male voice said.
    Heat surged to her face with the force of scalding water, her mouth forming a wide O. She dropped her pen, fumbling with both hands to regain hold of the phone she’d nearly tossed like a hot potato.
    Speaking of hot.
    That was not the voice she was expecting. Not that anyone had ever talked dirty to her before, but Lord he had the perfect voice for it. Or had she subconsciously dialed Make-MeMelt? Because it really had been one of those weeks.
    With her colleagues now looking quizzically in her direction, she closed her gaping mouth and offered a weak smile. Not that she was fooling them. She would share her moment of mortification later. They would love this. Pushing with her toes, she swiveled the chair around until she faced the window. Her white shirt suddenly seemed a bit tighter over her heated skin. She took a small breath, ignored the race of her pulse, and fought to regain composure.
    “I’m so sorry, I thought you were Sweet Delights,” she said in a lowered tone as she cringed inwardly.
    “I am.”
    “I’m sorry?”
    “Sweet Delights—that’s me,” he drawled.
    Sweet Delights indeed. The name suddenly conjured up images of naughtiness that had nothing to do with delicious cakes and pastries. Treat Day Friday had suddenly taken on a new meaning.

New Tricks

Welcome to Friday!

I often find tips shared by writers to be invaluable. This week, as I have been working to add the sparkle to my completed rough draft of Sweetest Temptation, I thought I'd share some of my tips with you.

Writing is a life-long learning curve. There is always something or someone to learn from. However, your words are your words and it's important to keep the voice in the story that is you. That means that one writers process does not fit all and may not suit your goals. Writers need a virtual toolbox to store away all of the good advice and learning experiences, and a rubbish bag to throw away all of the bad. For instance, I no longer attempt complicated plans. I have learned through trial and error that I am a fully fledged pantser and all of the time I had spent planning is completely useless when I veer off on a tangent.

So here are the things that have been working for me in the edit process...

Font - This was something I discovered after I'd published my first two books. During your read through change your font. Reading your manuscript through on a different font can highlight a multitude of sins. As they say, familiarity breeds contempt, or should this be complacency? Writing your book in your preferred, or required font, is like a trusted friend. You've written and read over the same section so many times it's ingrained on your brain and any errors tend to camouflage - until you change your font.

Order - I don't know about you, but I can remember moments in the past far easier than remembering something I've done this week. Your manuscript is the same. I work more on my first few chapters than any others and therefore have read them through more times than the later ones. I read through all of my chapters before I continue with the next and so, as above, I get to know those words off by heart. So I now edit from the end to the beginning, working backwards so I'm reading each sentence individually without the obvious flow. It's like reading with fresh eyes.

Now this is a new one for me...

Reading out loud - This week I decided to try reading out loud. Well, not really loud it's more of a whisper. And I have to say I kind of like it. I'm starting to pick out what sounds natural and unnatural, and if the pace needs adjusting. That said, it's one of those things best done at home ;-)

Author Perks

There are many, many benefits of being a writer. Fulfilling your need to express and create, researching and discovering something new. Of course there is the thrill of gaining a contact which never ceases to gain an inelegant squeal or two. But, one of the perks has to be having a valid reason to search for images. Yep, I'm talking the hunt for man chest here.

Personally as a reader I don't need a specific image to refer to for the hero or heroine. I generally form my own visual from the author's description, and also from how I want them to look. Writing though - completely different. Often an image can drag you out of a sticky spot, invigorate your imagination, and okay I admit, they make you feel pretty happy. I often use pinterest to formulate ideas and sometimes there will be an image that inspires a line of dialogue or a new scene.

So, would I be happy if my hubby started searching pinterest for the same images I do? Not at all. Sexist much? I have to admit it is. But my hubby works as an engineer, so having a female form board would be pretty hard for him to explain. I'm lucky enough that this is a perk I get to call 'research'.

Tantalizing Tuesday - Employee of the Month by Tracey Rogers

Hello and welcome to another Tantalizing Tuesday! This week I'm sharing an excerpt of my new release Employee of the Month.

“I asked you to give me a chance, and you doubted my sincerity. Let me prove it.”

“Max…”

“What, are you scared to have me around in case I prove you wrong?” He folded his arms over his chest, his eyes brimming with a challenge that dried her mouth.

“Is that why you’ve been at the hotel more recently, and you call me every night? Are you trying to make me like you again?”

He grinned. “You always liked me—you just need to trust me.”

“Why make so much effort?”

“Because some things are worth the risk,” he said softly, his lips dropping.

Holly walked over to the corner of the room, knelt down, and picked up a paintbrush. She made her way back, handed it to him, and tried to ignore the rise of his satisfied grin.

“This doesn’t change anything,” she said after clearing her throat. “You’re here for the baby’s benefit, nothing more.”

“Sure,” he said with a brighter grin. And she could have sworn that grin got broader as she walked out the door.

When she returned, wearing her painting sweatpants and oversized t-shirt, there was a flip in her belly that had nothing to do with the baby. Eyes wide, she took in the sight of a bare-chested Max hunched down on the now tarp-covered floor, biceps working as he swept a brush into the corner of the wall like he was caressing a lover—focused, intent, and with accurate precision. He wielded his brush like a fingertip.

“What are you doing?” she asked with a dry mouth.

He turned and stood, looking at her with a raised brow. “Painting. That was what you wanted me to do, wasn’t it?”

“Well, yes. But I wasn’t asking you to do it naked.”

“Naked.” He cast a glance downward. “I’m not exactly naked, am I?”

No, he wasn’t, but the impact was very much the same. And why did her eyes keep dropping longingly to his pecs, her gaze drifting slowly over his abs? He had a body that didn’t belong behind a desk. It belonged in her bed, she thought with a sigh.

“Is my naked chest bothering you?”

If by ‘bothered’ he meant aching nipples and a stirring in the panty area, then yes. “No, I was surprised, that’s all.”

“Much easier to wash paint off my body than my suit, don’t you think? Unless you still have my old t-shirt here?”

“But your trousers will be ruined anyway. And no, I don’t have your t-shirt, I tossed it.”

His faltering smile almost made her regret the lie. His t-shirt was safely tucked away from paint splatters.

He quickly recovered. “Are you saying I should remove these too? I can paint in my boxers if you prefer?”

She narrowed her eyes with suspicion. Was he trying to tease her with his naked man flesh? If so, it wasn’t going to work. Not entirely. “No, I wouldn’t prefer that at all. I’m surprised to see you paint in anything.”

“You expected naked?” He grinned.
