"So this is it, huh?"

Johnny could tell she was on the verge of tears.

"You're going to completely shut down, or whatever you do, and not acknowledge what happened between us."

"What's to acknowledge? I was drunk. End of story." Opening the door, he turned. "I don't know what you're hoping for, Beaumont, but I'm not it. Go find a nice accountant or something."

She pursed her lips until they practically disappeared. Her cheeks were on fire. "How dare you? How dare you treat me like that? We're not at work. I didn't have to come here, and you know it. I came here to do you a favor."

"You came here because you wanted to get laid."

She threw her hands in the air. "No wonder no one can stand you! You're unbelievable."

Maybe. But it was working. She'd leave him alone after this.

"They may not like me, but I've never pretended to be something I'm not. Unlike you."

"What's that supposed to mean?" She was breathing heavily, her breasts straining underneath the sheer pink blouse that was just a little too tight for business attire. His throat was bone dry, and all of a sudden he wanted another beer. Anything to make whatever this was go away.

"It means that innocent act you put on is a load of crap." That was a lie. He knew damned well she didn't sleep around.

Her mouth hung open. "Excuse me?"

Time to move in for the kill. He leaned closer, ignoring how she smelled, ignoring how her pulse drummed at the hollow of her throat. Ignoring everything but the overwhelming instinct to push her away. "Let's just say I know I wouldn't be the first, Beaumont, or the last."

With cat-like quickness, she slapped him across the face. Hard. "Go to hell."

Before she could turn away, he clamped onto her wrist and yanked her back around.

"You're hurting me."

"Don't ever do that again." He pulled her close. She was rigid, furious. She tried pulling free, but he just tightened his grip. Let her go, Street. Now.

A long, honey colored strand of hair had fallen over one of her eyes, which were settled on him with such hostility that he almost did let her go. Almost. The skin on the inside of her wrist slid against the pad of his fingers like silk. He yanked her even closer, hating himself for being so rough, but not knowing how to be anything else. Her chest brushed up against his, her face only inches away.

"You know what I think?" he said.

Refusing to answer, she continued looking at him like she wanted to stick a knife between his ribs.

"I don't think you want me to let you go." He looked from her eyes, to her lips, to her chest, barely able to stand still next to her. "I think you like this."

She yanked her wrist free with surprising strength, but made no move to back away. "You make me sick."

"You wish I made you sick." As fast as she'd slapped him, he cupped the back of her head and crushed his lips to hers.

Peeling off her clothes, Jessica stepped into the warm torrents of water and tilted her head back until her hair was soaked. She closed her eyes and leaned against the tiled wall, forgetting for a moment where she was and letting the shower lull her into a kind of stupor. Slowly, the tension in her exhausted muscles began to ease. The water ran from her shoulders, over her breasts, and down her belly in hot little streams, whose miniature currents twisted and turned from the texture of her skin.

She must have fallen asleep, at least for a minute, because when the bathroom door opened, she didn't hear it.

"Hey."

She jumped and nearly hit her head on the showerhead. Fitz stood outside the frosted door, holding a towel and averting his gaze.

"Oh my God," she panted, trying to cover her chest and other unmentionables.

"I knocked. You didn't answer," he said matter-of-factly. "Here's your towel." Setting it down on the counter, he didn't make any move to leave. Instead, he stood there, head down, large shoulders hunched, his hand resting on the white terry cloth fabric.

She stayed absolutely still, the water pouring over her body and pooling at her feet before disappearing down the drain. Her heart quickened as she took him in. But not for all the logical reasons it should have. She should have been panicking. After all, she was completely naked. Completely exposed. And he was a deviant. A low life. He kept company with thugs. But it was as if something in her brain had clicked off. All she could wrap her thoughts around at that very moment was how he had looked standing over Albert. And how he'd felt when she'd curled into him afterward.

"Do you think you can hold on for just a few more hours?" he said, his voice so low she could barely hear it. "I'm going to get you out of here. But you have to trust me."

She stared at the side of his face, unable to make out his exact expression, but sure it was serious. Hard.

Trust him. Two little words, but how complicated they were. How intricate.

She didn't know how, or why, or even when she'd started to change over the last twenty-four hours, but of one thing she was certain—she already did trust him. Completely. God help her.

She opened her mouth to answer, the water streaming down her face, her saturated hair just barely touching her shoulders.

He turned to her, his movements deliberate and measured. Her pulse thumped in her neck, her body heating in areas it shouldn't have. The tops of her breasts swelled over her arm which attempted to cover them, and she was aware of every single inch of exposed skin that he'd be able to see, even through the cloudy glass of the shower door. Still, she didn't move, the words that she wanted to say thick and catching in her throat.

Condensation dripped down the glass, creating jagged lines of clarity where there weren't any before. She could tell his eyes were moving over her. He didn't bother hiding it. They took her in, from her ankles, up the curve of her legs, over her hips, and toward her dripping chest. The knowledge sent a thrill through her. She was painfully self-conscious by nature; never in her life had she stood naked in front of a man. And certainly not one like this, a brooding, dangerous stranger. Yet she could feel the incredibly erotic, feminine power she had over him, simply by standing in one spot and staring right back. It was enough to make her body tremble in places she didn't even know she had.

Just when she couldn't stand the tension one second longer, just when she thought she might actually open the shower door and pull him in with her, he turned away.

"I'll take that as a yes," he said, and walked out the door.

Holiday Recipes: Kaylie Newell's No-Bake Ritz Christmas Cookies

Ingredients:
Box of Ritz crackers
Two packages of almond bark. One chocolate, one vanilla
Creamy peanut butter

Make two dozen peanut butter "sandwich" crackers. Melt one package of almond bark completely. Dip half the crackers in so that they're completely covered. Set on waxed paper to dry. Repeat process with the other package of almond bark. When all the cookies are dry, you can decorate by drizzling the leftover almond bark over them.

Today instead of giving the blurbs to the books, I thought it would be neat if we told why this book is special to us. First up, Kaylie Newell on her new book Falling In Danger.

I’m SO excited for the release of my new contemporary romantic suspense, Falling In Danger.  This book is special to me for many reasons.  I absolutely love the characters, the story is close to my heart, and 40% of the proceeds will go to The Pixie Project animal rescue.  All reasons why I’m in love with it!

But I didn’t always feel so close to this book. It was my problem child.  It was extremely hard to write, nothing came easy.  At one point I had to wipe away nearly half of the story and start over in the middle because it wasn’t going in the direction I had planned.  I struggled with it daily, belly aching endlessly to my critique partners.  “I’m worried it isn’t any good,” I’d say.  “It’s not coming together like I was hoping it would.”  But they, along with my other friends and family encouraged me to finish.  And eventually, I became determined to do just that.  Just like an unruly teenager, it gave me daily fits, but I loved it dearly anyway.  I believed in it.  I wanted to finish because I knew deep down that I wanted it to see the light of day.

When I look back on those seven months of writing, I feel like a proud mama.  I’m hoping this kid will go places.

Like Kaylie mentioned, More Than Useful was one that I had great difficulty with. As you will see in the dedication, I dedicated it to my dog Cocoa. Why? Without her support to go on many walks, I never would have finished this one. There were days I only wrote 500 words before getting frustrated and shutting down the computer. Now when I look back, I think it was so difficult because I had grown as a writer. In More Than Useful, I think its the first book where I really started to get into character. I had already edited two books with my great editor at Beachwalk. And I had learned. I had gotten feedback on my writing and knew it was time to learn some more. When I read the galley to this one, I actually got lost in my own book and knew I needed to go back and double check what I wrote. I hope that if you've followed me along my journey, that you enjoy my latest.

Distractions

Hi again all,

So, back to the title - distractions, hang on, there's my phone ringing...

When I am not sure of my plot, or suffering from a little bout of writer's block, distractions plague me; every little thing will grab my attention, from a fly at the window to my stomach thinking it needs lunch at 9.30 in the morning, I am hooked by them all! As for the web, I can spend literally hours reading tweets, blogs, articles, 'how to be more productive' is a particular favourite ;)

But then, when I am in the thick of a good writing session where everything is working out and my typing can just about keep up with my thoughts, nothing gets through. Phonecalls, kittens climbing up the new curtains, even food (imagine that), nothing can distract me.

So my question for you is, what should you be doing right now?

Scary Stuff Rocks!

Halloween is only a little over a week away. This year the fam and I will be going to a
friend’s house to have spaghetti and meatballs (a four year tradition) and to take the little monsters trick-or-treating.

But my best friend and I have a slightly different tradition. Chickens at heart, we usually shy away from anything that will make our hearts beat faster than usual. However, the weekend before Halloween, we put on our big girl pants and go to a haunted house. Cheesy, you say? Why, yes. But sooo much fun ;) Last year I almost fell on my face when I was running at warp speed through a corn maze, while some guy in a dollar store mask trotted along after me. Comical when I look back on it now, but at the time I thought I was going to have a coronary.
My husband has a hard time understanding why I love to be scared so much. Scary movies, scary
books, haunted houses on Halloween night, complete with a full moon to light the way? Bring em on! I think by being scared, I’m getting in touch with the kid in me, which is always fun.
And being scared with my bestie? Even better. We can scream at the top of our lungs like 12 year-olds and go back to being mommy’s and wives the next morning with no one being the wiser.
Well, except for the guys in the dollar store masks ;)

Autumn Inspiration

Fall is my favorite time of year. It always has been, ever since I was a little kid. I'm a sucker for stormy weather, scary movies and spooky stories :) When I decided to embark on this wonderful romance novelist adventure, I knew I'd want to throw a few shivers into my books for good measure.

I'll never forget a fall four years ago when I had an idea for a story which took place in a particular house down the street from us. The house was for sale at the time, and abandoned, but beautiful and mysterious. And more than just a little scary looking. Built in 1913, it had the "old" vibe down pat. It was enormous; two stories, with black shutters and big white pillars out front. It had a circular drive, which was strewn with leaves from the ancient oaks in the front yard.

I told my husband I was heading out to write, but instead of boing to Barnes and Noble which is my usual haunt, I found myself pulling into the driveway of this colonial beauty. It was dusk and the wind was howling around my car, blowing leaves everywhere. I pulled out my pad and pen (this was before my netbook and I was still kicking it old school) and started brainstorming. What would it be like to meet a real estate agent there, with night falling and a storm brewing? And what if that real estate agent turned out to be a little twisted? I began a story called The Showing, which ended up winning first place in a Halloween contest that same year.

Every time I drive by that house, which has since had a nice (normal) family move in, I think about that night. I learned something about mood and ambience when writing, and how it can really make or break a story.

Barnes and Noble rocks, but when I really want to kick it up a notch, I head for places where I can actually see my story come alive. And when you're writing spooky stuff, that's the most fun.

This year? A cemetery.

Okay. So maybe I'll have my husband come with me this time.
