A Standing Resolution

It’s that time of year again, after the inevitable excesses of the Holidays, when we begin to imagine something better for ourselves, when we RESOLVE to do better. I’m no exception to this tradition. And this year, like so many others in the past, I am RESOLVING to lose some weight and exercise more.

I’ve been seeing some interesting articles about how sitting down all day is really bad for us, and how some people have gone to using a “standing desk” or “tall desk”, which makes a surprising difference in heart health. (Not to be confused with those amazing folks who use a treadmill desk. That’s way out of my league I’m afraid. I can’t walk and chew gum at the same time, much less use a keyboard.) After quite a bit of thinking and measuring and drawing and planning, I put together my tall desk in my writing room this past week. It’s constructed very simply of two stainless steel shelving racks 36” tall by 24” deep by 18” wide, and a 6 foot run of pre-cut laminated counter top. I chose open shelving because in this space I don’t have a need for drawer-type storage, and because I hate dark, spidery spaces under desks. Brrr. I also ordered a drafting stool that I can sit on when my legs get tired.

So far, I love it. The white counter top reflects lots of light into the room and the increased height allows me a better view out the little dormer window above the desk. I’m thinking this arrangement might really inspire my writing. And who knows? It might even help me keep my New Years Resolution.

What Resolutions are you making this year?

  2. To lose some weight and exercise more is on my resolution list every single year. Hopefully this year I'll do a better job meeting that goal the entire year, not just the first few months :)
