Black Friday Blues

It’s Black Friday here in the US, the day after Thanksgiving, when all the retailers mark down their prices in an extreme attempt to lure holiday shoppers. This year the stores are opening even earlier in the day than they did last year. Some of them opened at midnight last night! Call me Ms. Scrooge, but I cannot even imagine just getting my dinner digested only to put on my coat and go out into the frigid darkness to battle the crowds.

Yeah, I gotta be at work at my usual time this morning. And yeah, I have a dentist appointment this afternoon to have a tooth pulled. (Yikes.) But even if I didn’t have those important things to do today, I would not be joining the shoppers. I figured out long ago that retail therapy does not ring my bells – even in the Christmas Season. I think I just didn’t get the shopping gene passed down to me. (I also cannot make pie crust, though my mother and both my sisters are acclaimed pie makers.)

How about you? Do you love to shop? Did you score any great bargains today? Tell us what you bought and whether you had fun out there.

  1. Hope you had a lovely thanksgiving!
Yes, Pepper, I'm with you - I wonder where my lady genes went to - I hear we're supposed to like shopping and cleaning, but I'm sorry, I'm happy to live in an messy house with no new stuff! Am I weird?
    I like a crush of bodies in a concert hall - not a shopping mall x x

  2. Good luck with the tooth extraction. I'm with you, I've NO desire to get out and run around in the chaos today. I may do some shopping via my computer, though. There are some great cyber-bargains and I don't even have to get out of my PJ's......LOL!!

  3. Hey Tabitha, Hey Laurie: Thanks for commiserating with me. I do notice there seems to be quite a bit of backlash in the news from folks like us who just don't get the whole Black Friday thing. Maybe we are not a small minority after all. I'm with you Laurie, online shopping is the way to go with most gifts, especially if you ship direct and avoid the post office too. Let me be the first to say it: Happy Holidays!

  4. I do not enjoy shopping in general (which my husband always found a bit odd, but he was thankful for it :) and I especially do not enjoy it on Black Friday. I'm very thankful for online shopping, so I'm looking forward to Cyber Monday.
